Careers guidance at Foxford

Mrs Canning is our qualified Futures Adviser. Her office is based in the social area. Mrs Canning delivers careers guidance to students at key transition points in their education. She works closely with Mrs Norton, an Assistant Head Teacher. Both can be contacted using the email addresses below:

What we offer

Key Stage 3 (years 7-9)

Careers guidance begins with an exploration of skills, self-awareness and character education through our weekly PSHE programme, delivered by tutor teams. Each year group experiences an annual enterprise focused Enrichment Day, with exciting themes including a Dragons’ Den project and competition. Bi-annual Progress Review meetings support students in setting and meeting targets related to their future aspirations.

Key Stage 4 (years 10-11)

Each student has at least one appointment with Mrs Canning, who will support and advise on a range of futures-related issues, such as post-16 pathways, career choices and apprenticeships. Pupils or parents can request an additional meeting by contacting either Mrs Canning or Mrs Norton.

Students in year 10 experience an annual mock interview day, whereby students are tutored through the process of making an application and honing their interview skills, ahead of an interview with an outside professional. A range of business organisations support our school in this incredibly successful learning experience. Year 10 students also attend the annual Skills Show at the Birmingham NEC, where they are given exposure to a wide-range of future options.

Mrs Canning directs a bespoke work related learning programme which is tailored to meet individual students’ needs. She also develops a bespoke work experience programme and supports students in making contact with employers.

Key stage 5 (Year 12-13)

Foxford’s Post-16 students enjoy a wide range of tailored experiences. All students attend a UCAS day to explore university options and are fully guided and supported in making successful applications. The highlight of the calendar is the year 12 residential experience at Aberystwyth University, where students experience life as an undergraduate.

The Director of post-16, Mrs Natali, runs a full and varied programme of guest-speakers and careers-focused workshops. Both Mrs Natali and Mrs Canning work together to direct students towards bespoke work experience placements, high quality apprenticeships and access to higher education opportunities.
