Science Faculty

Science enables us to explain, understand and engage with our environment. Scientists have been able to explain our world for many years yet still research continues with exciting and new discoveries being made every day. Science at Foxford allows students to understand and experience the world around them and be part of the research into their future.

Science is able to inform problem solving and decision making in many areas of life. Many of the major challenges and opportunities that currently confront our planet need to be approached from a scientific perspective, taking into account social and ethical considerations.

By studying science, students:

  • develop an understanding of their world, built on current scientific theories
  • learn that science involves processes and ways of developing and organising knowledge and that these continue to evolve
  • use their current scientific knowledge and skills for problem solving and developing further knowledge
  • use scientific knowledge and skills to make informed decisions about the communication, application, and implications of science as these relate to their own lives and cultures and to the sustainability of the environment.

The Foxford Science Faculty aims to provide engaging and exciting lessons set within a curriculum that enables ALL students to become investigative and curious learners. We aim to develop our learners into confident young scientists with an enthusiasm for research and problem solving which will allow them to achieve when they embark on their careers.

Curriculum in Science

Your child will study a broad and balanced curriculum that covers the necessary content for public examinations but also aims to engage and enthuse.  We follow the suit of AQA courses at key stage four.  Our key stage three course aims to embed the key skills and knowledge for success.

All Foxford students study a general science course in in years 7 and 8 covering biology, chemistry, physics and ‘working scientifically’.  Pupils are encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They are encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.

At the start of year 9, students continue to study biology, chemistry and physics but begin their GCSE studies.  We believe that our students succeed best by studying all three science disciplines with the option of personalisation of course towards the end of their GCSE studies.  Our belief is that students who love science will enjoy their study and succeed.

In key stage five, students who join our sixth form can study science at A level or through the more vocational Applied Science course; both popular options.

Extra Curricular Activities

There is a science club and a STEM club which are highly popular and run every week.  In KS5, field trips to support project based areas of the course are undertaken.

The Foxford Science Faculty

In Science, we aim to provide great teaching which ensures great learning.  We recognise and embrace the fact that science is a practical subject.  We embed a range of practicals into many of our lessons to engage students, enthuse students and develop key practical and analytical skills.  We assess students twice in every half-term, once formatively to develop their skills and once summatively, to confirm current levels.  We are fortunate to have iPad and apple TVs in each of our well equipped laboratories as well as a class set of iPads for use by students. We have a team of highly qualified staff who are passionate about their subject and supportive of our student scientists.
